The reuse of treated wastewater in irrigation represents a strategic option in order to preserve, based on the exploitation of non-conventional resources, a limited water potential. This option was already used, as far back in time as 1965, in the zone of Soukra where the treated effluent of the wastewater treatment plant of Charguia was used for irrigation.

A volume of about 30% of the treated wastewater currently serves for the irrigation of 9750 hectares, distributed as follows:

farming zones: 8260 ha;
golf courses: 1040 ha;
green spaces: 450 ha.
