* This project was implemented within the framework of the IVth Presidential Programme for the Sanitation of Popular Quarters (2004-2009).

First and Second Projects: State budget, World Bank and USAID;
Third and Fourth Projects: State Budget and French Development Agency (AFD).

On health:
Prevention of diseases and epidemics likely to result from unregulated disposal of such wastewater in streets and lanes;
Elimination of foul odours and insect nursing grounds.
On economic development
Conferring land property value upon the quarters involved in the sanitation works, which attracts investment, thus promoting economic activity;
Splitting the projects into small and medium-sized lots in order to allow local and regional contractors to participate in the tenders.
This project has, on the other hand, contributed in the provision of additional treated wastewater volumes, estimated as about 35 million m3, which can be reused in economic activities.
On the wastewater network development
This programme allows for stepping up the sanitation infrastructure, and this by:
the laying of 2800 km of pipes;
the construction of 150 pumping stations;
the construction of 208000 connection boxes.
On economic efficiency
This programme contributes in the creation of employment in the beneficiary regions through the hiring of technicians and engineers to conduct the necessary technical studies and supervision of the works, as well as the hiring of workers for the maintenance and upkeep of the new networks. It also contributes in the creation of employment through the contractors entrusted with conducting the works.
Other advantages obtaining from this project: the social and solidarity dimension
This project is intended to improve the environmental and health condition of vulnerable social categories living in quarters that used to be marginalized and exposed to the proliferation of diseases and worsening living conditions.
